What are manufactured boards?

Engineered materials from wood waste using adhesives & heat

Key advantage of manufactured boards

Consistent properties throughout every sheet produced

What is dimensional stability?

Won't warp, twist, or split like natural wood over time

Manufactured boards strength vs natural timber

Can be stronger than natural timber of same thickness

Timber flakes, chips, or strands with resin adhesive

Main weakness of chipboard

Poor moisture resistance - can swell and deteriorate

How is plywood constructed?

Multiple thin wood layers (veneers) bonded with adhesive

Plywood grain orientation

Each layer perpendicular to adjacent layers

Surface treatment needed for boards

Edge treatment & surface finishing with veneer/laminate
