Definition of a gear

A toothed wheel that connects to a shaft

What is a spur gear?

A rotating wheel with teeth around its edge that connects with another spur gear

What is a driver gear?

The gear that receives the original power input and starts the movement

What is a driven gear?

The gear that receives power from the driver gear and produces output movement

Definition of a simple gear train

Two spur gears connected together on parallel shafts

Direction of rotation in two connected gears

They rotate in opposite directions

Advantage of gears over pulley systems

Meshing teeth prevent slipping, can apply greater forces

Main purpose of an idler gear

To change the direction of rotation

Effect of idler gear on output speed

It doesn't change the output speed at all

Purpose of compound gear trains

To create bigger speed changes than simple gear trains

Velocity ratio formula

Driven gear teeth ÷ driver gear teeth

Output speed formula

Input speed ÷ velocity ratio

Rotation speed of larger gears (more teeth)

Rotate slower

Rotation speed of smaller gears (fewer teeth)

Rotate faster

Effect when small gear drives large gear

Slower output speed but higher force (torque)
